PERTH Glory Football Club captain Michael Thwaite is encouraging parents and children to walk to school.

Michael is the ambassador for the Walk Over October campaign and will launch Walk to School Day tomorrow.

The event aims to promote the benefits of walking to school for parents and children.

National guidelines recommend children aged between 5 and 18 do at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily.

Despite most children living within a 20-minute walk to their school, two out of three primary school children in the Perth metropolitan area are driven to school, according to the Heart Foundation.

The Foundation believes walking and cycling to school helps to boost the physical activity levels of children and reduces the effects of sitting.
