Harley revs up for mayoral run

Caitlin TillerEastern Reporter

City of Perth Councillor Reece Harley is the latest contender in the race for Mayor ahead of the local government election on October 17.

The 28-year-old Perth resident is running against mechanical engineer and business-owner MikeO'Hanlen.

Mr Harley, who has been a City of Perth councillor since 2013, said he was running to inject some "fresh blood" into the role.

With his four-year term in council set to end in 2017, a by-election would be necessary to fill the Perth ward if Mr Harley wins the mayoral election.

Chief executive Gary Stephenson said it would cost approximately $30,000 for a by-election.

"There is provision in the Local Government Act 1995 to consider holding the position vacant until the following election," Mr Stephenson said.

"This would be subject to the consideration of Council and the WA Electoral Commissioners.

Mr Harley said the cost of a by-election was "unfortunate".

"I would prefer to see the candidate with the fifth highest votes get elected, as it would make logical sense if there were five vacancies on Council," he said.
