HIGHGATE resident Peter Le came to Australia as a refugee with nothing but the clothes on his back.

“I have always been grateful for the opportunities that this great country has given me and I have always been conscious to give back to the community whenever I can,” Mr Le said.

He is the recipient of the 2019 WA Volunteer for Multicultural Communities Award, presented to him at the WA Volunteer of the Year Awards on May 22.

The City of Rockingham Senior Legal Officer is the founder and chairperson for the Lawyers in Local Government and the Asian Business Alliance.

Mr Le also divides his time with both the Vietnamese Community in WA and Asian Australian Lawyers Association.

He was awarded for his volunteer work with culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

“I came to Australia at the age of four as a refugee, together with my parents and two sisters and brother, shortly after the end of the Vietnam War,” he said.

“We were amongst the first Vietnamese boat people to arrive in Australia – my family settled in Melbourne first and then we later moved to Perth.”

Mr Le said a career in law has enabled him to help others.

“There is nothing more rewarding and satisfying than giving back to the community in which you live and helping those that are less fortunate,” he said.
