Homes for Carers: Leederville business calls for foster family homes

Julian WrightEastern Reporter

A LEEDERVILLE business has put a call out for at least 20 large houses to accommodate foster families as part of a pilot program.

Foundation Housing has teamed with the State Government to launch the Homes for Carers program, which aims to secure homes from the private rental market to accommodate family foster carers who need a larger home to care for a related child.

Acting chief executive Chris Smith said the program would also benefit landlords in a sluggish rental market.

He said houses with four or more bedrooms were needed throughout the Perth metropolitan area and as far south as Warnbro.

“The pilot program has been designed to provide stable, affordable accommodation for carer families in the private rental market while offering incentives for participating landlords,” he said.

Mr Smith assured only tenants with excellent rental histories would participate in the program and in return landlords would reduce the rental rate.

“(Landlords would) be asked to rent the property at 80 per cent of the market rate on a long term, two to three year lease,” he said.
