Individual contributions at the heart of progress

Director Pam Herron and deputy director Dean Cracknell said the strip was facing challenges to continue developing and attracting people.

‘There are a lot of challenges facing the strip, including businesses closing, bus lanes being added, shopping centres expanding and online retail, which the community has been concerned about for a while,’ Mr Cracknell said.

‘But there is a lot of opportunity as well.

‘The best thing that town centres can do is focus on their strengths, which is about creating real authentic experiences.

‘The best way to help to the area and the local businesses is to have more people on the street.’

To outline the principles guiding the street’s progress and create a point of difference for Beaufort Street, the Network is releasing its first Better Beaufort Action Plan this month.

The five guiding principles focus on encouraging people to the area through experiences, safe and comfortable streets and innovation.

‘This is a plan for the whole community, not just the network, and hopefully this is fairly representative of what the community thinks,’ Mr Cracknell said. ‘There are lots of opportunities to be creative, lots of laneway and if everyone can do a little bit’
