KARRINYUP resident and budding photographer Fraser West has snapped up a Best and Brightest Award in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) category.

The Churchlands Senior High School student and fellow classmate Elisa Menegazzo are among 199 best and brightest Year 12 students recognised by Education Minister Peter Collier for their outstanding achievements in 2016.

Fraser, who will complete a Diploma of Photography at Tafe next year, said he was honoured to win the award.

“I feel very proud being selected as VET dux of Churchlands Senior High School and being regarded as one of the state’s brightest students,” he said.

“I knew that finishing with high marks would give me a greater number of options when applying for further studies after high school. The opportunity to be awarded the VET dux helped to motivate me throughout my classes this year and kept me focused on doing the best work possible.”

The 18-year-old said he had thoroughly enjoyed his time at Churchlands and had been offered many different opportunities to work out what career path he would choose.

“Churchlands offers a wide range of subjects in both ATAR and non-ATAR pathways,” he said.

“Through the workplace learning program, I have had the opportunity to experience different work environments and gain first-hand knowledge of what these careers can offer.

“The staff have helped and motivated me to produce the best work I can and while I am still unsure of a specific career, I hope to pursue a line of work that involves photography.”

Fraser said he also hoped to take his photography around the world and experience different cultures.

The award is provided to the ATAR dux and the Vocational Education and Training (VET) who meet the criteria.
