Larger recycling bins proposed

Sophie GabrielleEastern Reporter

VINCENT Councillor Dan Loden says the council should be encouraging residents to recycle more and waste less.

Mr Loden presented a motion at last Tuesday’s meeting to investigate whether the council could introduce 360L recycling bins instead of the current 240L bins for residents.

In conjunction, he would like to see the domestic waste collection bin reduced from 240L to 140L or the frequency of collection reduced to once a fortnight.

Councillors approved the motion.

Cr Loden said the amount of waste that residents were producing and the cost of disposing it were increasing.

“The more we can recycle, the less waste goes to landfill,” Cr Loden said. “A number of local residents have contacted me about recycling bins.

“It (the initiative) would encourage residents to recycle.”

Mayor John Carey said he did not think the larger recycling bins would get final approval.

“The critical aim is to reduce waste and reuse in the home,” Mr Carey said.
