A PROGRAM designed to empower Indigenous women was launched this month.

Perth-based Leadership WA’s launch of the Aboriginal Women’s Leadership Initiative coincided with Naidoc Week with the aim of 200 Aboriginal women of all ages graduating from the program throughout the next three years.

Leadership WA chief executive Robin McClellan said it was based on the successful 2015 pilot program Yorga Djenna Bidi.

“Empowering individual women and bringing them together is a powerful agent of change and we believe that investment in women is one of the best ways to have a positive social impact on Western Australia,” she said.

“The pilot program brought 20 different women together, from different backgrounds, and gave them tools to understand themselves better.

“Their confidence grew, knowledge increased and their communication skills became more effective in a short time, they also developed an amazing network that continues to sustain them.

“We know this leadership program works.”

Ms McClellan said at the time of the launch, funding was still being finalised, but she remained confident.

Leadership WA is taking applications for the 2016 program.
