THE lights went out in Leederville this afternoon, with multiple intersections, homes and businesses going dark during a power outage.

The Mitchell Freeway/Southport Street off ramp, Southport Street/Vincent Street, Leederville Parade/Vincent Street/Freeway ramps and Oxford Street/Vincent Street traffic lights are all blacked out.

A Main Roads spokesman said generators were on their way.

Western Power reported an unplanned outage across suburbs including Leederville, West Leederville, Wembley and North Perth, with 1829 customers affected.

That number has since been revised down to 450.

An emergency response crew is on site.

“We have made sure the area is safe and have identified the cause as a damaged HV cable which will need to be repaired,” a spokesman said.

“Our team at Network Operations are now looking to feed power back into homes and businesses in the area as well as traffic lights ahead of the afternoon peak hour traffic.”

Power is expected to be restored by 4.30pm.
