Tucked away on Clyde Street, it features 26 courts ” 22 grass and four hard ” a newly furnished clubhouse and an ever-growing membership of about 330 adults and 90 juniors.

Ian Ketteringham took over from long-serving coaching director Bill Boyle (who still plays at the club) five years ago and feels fortunate to have assumed the revered role.

‘The club has been a big part of the suburb for a long time and has seen many houses grow around it,’ Mr Ketteringham said.

‘It started off in the bush and has gradually expanded while maintaining a country-club atmosphere.

‘The footprint of the club hasn’t changed that much over time. In the past 40 years it has taken over the bowling green and since added extra courts, including four hard courts with floodlights to give all-year play.’

He said one of the best parts of his job was seeing kids (as young as three) enjoy the game then go on to play youth and adult tennis.

‘We’ve got a lot of promising juniors. Ten years ago we had an older player base but now it’s changing with all the youngsters coming in,’ Mr Ketteringham said.

‘All clubs in the area are struggling to maintain membership so we’re really pleased to see ours growing.

‘We’re looking at bringing in even more members and changing the way people view their tennis ” making it more approachable.’

Long-serving member Jenny Taylor of nearby North Perth, who joined more than 20 years ago, plays at the club almost every day.

‘We have a reputation for the best grass courts in WA,’ Ms Taylor said.

‘I love the sense of community here ” everyone is so friendly. Whenever you come down, even if you are by yourself, someone will say, ‘do you want to join us?’

‘That’s the main reason why I’m a member.’
