Man who used rug to escape balcony arrested and charged

A MAN who allegedly used a throw rug to climb down a balcony and break into the apartment below has been arrested by Perth police.

The 42-year-old man, of no fixed address, allegedly entered the carpark of an Adelaide Terrace apartment and used the lifts to access the 10th floor between 2am-7am on Sunday.

Police believe the man broke into an apartment and stole $670 of goods, including $70 cash, a kitchen knife, sunglasses, a phone and mountain bike tools.

The residents were home and asleep at the time.

Police will allege he then used a rug tied to the balcony to climb to the balcony below, where he stole $50 cash.

A resident saw him in the building and called police, who arrested the man at the scene.

He was taken to Royal Perth Hospital for observation and was kept under police guard overnight.

Police charged him with two counts of aggravated burglary, two counts of stealing, two counts of trespassing and breach of bail.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on May 16.
