CITY of Vincent Mayor John Carey has received an award for his efforts to expand cycling options in Vincent.
He received the award for TravelSmart Champion, with the City getting a commendation in the Innovation category for its Bike Swap Meet events at the Department of Transport’s annual TravelSmart Awards.
Mr Carey said he was elated to receive the award in the Executive category.
Since his election in October 2013, he has pushed for an expanded cycling network in the City of Vincent.
‘Local government has not just a responsibility but an incredible opportunity to make our streets safer and more ‘liveable’ for everyone through significant and meaningful investment in bike lanes and infrastructure,’ Mr Carey said.
‘The TravelSmart program is critical to making our community a better place to live, by getting people out of cars and onto more sustainable, healthier and cleaner options.
‘The Vincent Bike Swap Meets have fast become a unique space for all manner of bike enthusiasts to meet; and they make a great Saturday morning ramble.’
As well as the Bike Swap Meets, the City has established a community bike library, funds bike education in schools, is installing new bike racks and is using carparking funds paid by developers for cycling projects.
