Mt Lawley graffiti incidents on the rise

THIRTY-one charges have been laid against graffiti vandals within the Mt Lawley electorate this month.

Mt Lawley MLA Michael Sutherland said there had been a spike in graffiti incidents in recent weeks.

“There have been a number of graffiti vandals caught recently by police including a 19-year-old man from Coolbinia who has been charged with 26 graffiti offences,” he said.

“If that’s not a win for our community, I don’t know what is.”

Targeted Graffiti Operations was implemented in 2011, which sees the WA Police Graffiti Team, Police Transport Unit work with local governments to catch and apprehend graffiti offenders.

City of Stirling mayor Giovanni Italiano said graffiti was “unsightly” and cost ratepayers.

“(It costs) far too much to clean up annually,” he said.

“We have been working collaboratively on this operation since early June to gather intelligence which has resulted in these vandals being held criminally accountable for their crimes.”
