MT LAWLEY MLA Michael Sutherland has clocked up nearly 80 blood donations and urges others to extend their arm on June 14 for World Blood Donor Day.

The day coincides with National Blood Donor Week from June 12-18, which is an annual celebration of Australia’s 500,000 blood donors who together make 1.3 million donations each year.

Mr Sutherland has been a regular blood donor for more than 40 years, and has so far given 73 donations in Australia.

“I have been donating blood regularly since the 1970s,” he said.

“I started in South Africa when the Red Cross used to visit the school where I taught to take donations.

“Donating blood has become part of my life and I encourage all those who can to donate blood regularly.”

Blood Service spokeswoman Tiffany Gourlay said blood donors were community champions.

She said it was estimated nine million Australians were eligible to give blood, but only 500,000 actively do so.

“With one in three people needing blood in their lifetime, you never know when you or a loved one will need it,” she said.
