Naidoc Week events throughout City of Perth

Julian WrightEastern Reporter

THE latest work by artists Sandra Hill and Jenny Dawson will be publicly unveiled this week at Weld Square as part of a Naidoc Week event.

The event, to be held on Saturdayfrom 12.30pm to 3pm, will also be a commemoration of The Coolbaroo League, which was a social club formed in 1946 by Aboriginal people when they were not permitted to enter the city.

From the 1950s, the League held weekly dances on the outskirts of the restricted zone, across from Weld Square, as a haven of hope for Aboriginal people.

The City of Vincent and Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority commissioned artwork by Hill and Dawson, which commemorates and includes personal stories about the Coolbaroo League.

The celebration will include Welcome to Country by Nyoongar Elders Doolann-Leisha and Walter Eatts, performances by TASHA and The Wadumbah Dance Group, refreshments by Perth’s only Aboriginal owned and operated catering company Kuditj and stories about the Coolbaroo League.

Naidoc Week comes weeks after the City finalised the commencement of its Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group, which is committed to developing the City’s first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

Meetings are held every three weeks while the RAP is being developed, then every quarter after its launch to monitor progress.

The first meeting is due to be held this month.
