Nock(ing) the blues

The 35-year-old raised $4500 by hosting the inaugural Black ‘n’ Blue heavy metal fundraiser, attracting more than 250 people to the Civic Hotel in Inglewood on Saturday, January 4.

Advent Sorrow and Grotesque were among 10 local bands that performed and supported the cause.

Mr Nock said the inspiration for the event was three-fold with the idea to raise awareness about depression among the heavy metal community.

‘It became apparent to me, particularly in recent years, just how common depression was within the community, even among some of my closest friends and loved ones,’ he said.

‘I saw the impact it had on their lives and, in turn, on mine.’

The environmental officer said he planned to hold the fundraiser annually with all money raised going towards supporting ABC programs to promote mental health education in WA.

‘Fundraising aside, it was great to bring the Perth heavy metal community together and to see the scene unite for the mental health cause,’ he said.

‘For me, personal satisfaction came from doing something completely new and in doing so, knowing that I was raising much-needed funds to spread the mentally healthy message.’
