Peacocks ruffle local feathers

Chief executive John Giorgi said an application for Casa Bianchi’s birds to remain at the Scarborough Beach Road site was deferred behind closed doors last Tuesday.

Mr Giorgi said officers had recommended a six-month trial, with numerous conditions about how to keep the peacocks on the property.

Instead, council asked owners for a management plan and further details before making a decision.

‘We understand the peacocks have been at the premises since mid-2012,’ he said. ‘The peacocks are a tourist attraction; however, the City has received complaints about noise (and) peacocks getting into neighbours’ gardens.

‘There is a risk that the complaints about noise will continue to be received.’

The City was not aware of peafowl kept anywhere else in Vincent.

‘There are peacocks at UWA,’ he said.
