Perth College students get inspiration speech from Dockers AFLW coach Michelle Cowan

Giovanni TorreEastern Reporter

PERTH College students gained an insight into the new women’s AFL (AFLW) – and to breaking down gender barriers – with Fremantle Dockers coach Michelle Cowan as guest speaker on International Women’s Day.

Dockers player and health and physical education teacher at the Mt Lawley school Amy Lavell helped secure Cowan as a guest speaker.

She said she hoped her speech inspired the students to pursue their dreams.

“Obviously there’s so much hype around AFLW at the moment, and with me as a teacher the students can relate to me, and we can show them there are no barriers to them succeeding in life in any thing they hope to do,” Lavell said.

“AFLW has broken down barriers and it shows the students they can do anything they choose to do in life; gender won’t stop them.”

Lavell combines full time work teaching at Perth College with the rigours of the new professional women’s league.

“It has been quite demanding and quite challenging but the school has been very supportive,” she said.

Lavell said she hoped to kick on in season 2018.
