PERTH’ first purpose-built, $3 million live comedy venue will open its doors on November 23.

Built above an existing Italian restaurant at 410 Murray street, Comedy Lounge will provide a place for local and international comedians to perform and will be open several nights each week all year round.

Director John McAllister said he and his wife Jane wanted to bring live comedy out of bar backrooms and give it its own venue.

“Actors have theatres, acrobats have circus tents; comedy too is a specialised craft that is ideally presented in a certain environment,” he said.

“It’s been a long time coming.”

The former plasterer who gave up his trade more than 10 years ago went from part-time aspiring comedian to owner of what was then known as Werzel’s Comedy Lounge.

A subsequent name and venue change has seen the Comedy Lounge present weekly shows at The Charles Hotel since 2007 and Little Creatures Fremantle since 2010.

Former Kath & Kim star Peter Rowsthorn will be a regular performer in the lead up to Christmas.
