AN East Perth distillery is planning a surprise for the inaugural Perth Indie Spirits Tasting next Wednesday.
Whipper Snapper Distillery founder Jimmy McKeown said his team had been working on a special drop they hoped to reveal at the event.
“We will have our moonshine and barrel age whiskey at the event but we may have something special, pre-release, something we’ve been working on,” he said. “It doesn’t come out until the end of the year.”
The event heads west after a successful run on the east coast, with the Perth leg to showcase more than 25 suppliers and 120 boutique spirits.
The tasting will give visitors a chance to try brands not on the market.
Mr McKeown said his team produced a “cleaner and lighter” whiskey.
“We went for a younger demographic, so not the single malt that is more for the older age bracket,” he said.
“A lot of people when you ask them about bourbon they go, ‘oh it was my first drink’, and a lot of people had it with Coke. We want people to appreciate whiskey as it is and educate people in what a whiskey actually is; it’s very similar to wine, and it’s very complex.”
Indie Spirits Tasting founder David Spanton said the WA distilling industry had enjoyed a boom.
“Perth is the perfect city to host such an event with its thriving small bar scene, amazing craft spirits and passionate bartending professionals and drinkers,” he said.
