Perth mates make mark in Variety 4WD Challenge before even hitting the road

Julian WrightEastern Reporter

FOUR Perth mates taking part in the Variety 4WD Challenge have raised more than $30,000 before they have even hit the road.

The seven-day fundraising trek starts from Kalgoorlie on May 27, and includes Laverton, Warburton and Uluru and finishes in Kings Canyon on June 3.

Mike Mannion (Maylands), Andrew Doig (Carlisle), Peter Doig (Perth) and Steven Murphy (Jolimont) originally aimed to raise $15,000 when they signed up for the challenge, but raised it to $35,000 when it was exceeded.

Mr Mannion and Andrew Doig completed a previous challenge with their wives, but this time made it a ‘boys only’ trip with their mates.

This trip required making a couple of minor alterations to the Mannion family 2010 Toyota Landcruiser.

“Mike’s using his wife’s car so he’s put a roof rack on there and spare tyres, taken the kids seats out of the back and put the fridges,” he said.

“I don’t know how four blokes are going to fit in that little white car, especially with two weeks worth of wine and swags.”

The team will have to cover up to 700kms on Great Central Road in one day to ensure they complete the challenge.

They plan to take in even more of the WA outback after the challenge is completed.

“This trip, we will come back via the Gunbarrel Highway, so we will spend an extra week just us blokes if we haven’t murdered each other,” Mr Doig said.

“We’ve never spent this much time together before.”
