PERTH MLA John Carey has slammed Coles’ move to give away reusable plastic bags for free, calling it “high farce”.
Coles announced it will scrap the 15c charge for the thicker, reusable plastic bags it rolled out across stores when the plastic bag ban came into effect on July 1.
Mr Carey expressed his disapproval on Facebook.
“I’m calling this for what it is: high farce,” he wrote.
“Coles giving away plastic bags, which does nothing to change customer behaviour and undoes the single use plastic ban.
“And please don’t get me started on the wasteful plastic mini-Coles supermarket toys, while they promote their anti-plastic message.
“Poor leadership by Coles.”
A Coles spokesman said customer feedback indicated they needed more time to transition to reusable bags.
