Police say members of the public also tried to stop the man.

He ran from the area and went into a fast food restaurant near the corner of Barrack Street and Murray Street.

He then allegedly grabbed a 23-year-old female staff member, threatening her with the machete.

Police tasered the man and he was arrested.

He was charged with being armed in a way that may cause fear, carrying a controlled weapon and making threats to kill.

The 43-year-old man will appear before Perth Magistrates Court today.
