Police officer dragged beside car during arrest attempt

POLICE say an officer who leaned through a car window was dragged up to 10m after the driver accelerated in Murdoch on Sunday night.

Senior Sergeant Brendan Moore said officers were attempting to arrest the 29-year-old Murdoch man on suspicion of assaulting a Belmont man (28) in Northbridge late last month when the incident occurred.

Snr Sgt Moore said an officer sent to arrest the man recognised his numberplate and approached the driver before asking him to stop the car at 11pm on November 1.

Snr Sgt Moore said the officer tried to take the keys out of the ignition when the man drove forward, pulling him along for 10m.

After spending the night in Royal Perth Hospital to treat soft tissue damage and grazes to his arms and legs, the police officer was released the next day.

Snr Sgt Moore said the Murdoch man turned himself in to Cannington Police Station early on Tuesday morning.

Police charged him with escape from lawful custody, fail to stop when directed, endangering the life of a person, reckless driving and driving a vehicle with a suspended licence.

He was also charged with assault occasioning bodily harm for the alleged incident outside Zambrero’s restaurant on Lake Street at 4.35am on October 31.

He is due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on December 2.
