A POPULAR Perth pub has cancelled its screening of the Melbourne Cup.

North Perth’s Rosemount Hotel took to social media last night to gauge patrons’ thoughts on showing the race that formerly stopped a nation.

“In the past few decades a lot of concerning news has come out about the treatment of horses in the horse racing industry,” the post said.

Crown staff promise Melbourne Cup chaos

“Futhermore (sic), in recent weeks there has been more news of this nature.

“In the same breath we are getting a lot of phone calls from punters keen to know that we are screening the Melburne (sic) Cup on Tuesday, November 5.”

It asked people to comment whether the pub should screen the race, with the majority of respondents voting no.

Many said they would visit the venue if they did not show the race and suggested holding a Nup to the Cup event instead.

This morning, the hotel posted its decision: “We have decided we will not be screening the races today and will instead be celebrating a beautiful sunny Tuesday afternoon with $10 Pizza specials all day and $7 Pints & $5 House Wines from 12pm – 1pm.”

Imagine a life without horse racing … wouldn’t that be something?
