Power moves underground in Perth suburb

Laura PondEastern Reporter

POWER poles are now a thing of the past in Menora.

Western Power removed the last remaining pole in the suburb last week as it switched to underground power as part of the State Underground Power Program.

The State and local government project saw 350 power poles removed in Menora, with 263 streetlights installed and 634 connections to properties.

Stirling mayor Mark Irwin watched the final pole removed on January 22 at the corner of Clyde Street and Elstree Avenue.

“Moving to underground power provides lots of benefits to property owners and the community such as enhancing the look of streetscapes and improving the reliability of electricity supply to residents,” he said.

“Just looking around Menora, it now has a bit of added charm without overhead powerlines.”

Works to deliver underground power in Trigg will start soon, with Woodlands, Mt Lawley, Coolbinia and Churchlands previously transferred.

The City of Stirling sought a review of the program last year, after its report found it put an “unacceptable cost burden” on residents and created bidding wars between local governments.

The report presented at the March council meeting said the City had concerns about the equity of the program for many years.

It followed backlash from some Menora residents about the program costs and supposed lack of consultation.
