PERTH’s business community watched in shock this morning as a man smashed a cream pie into the face of Qantas CEO Alan Joyce.

The man simply walked on to the Hyatt Regency stage, where Mr Joyce was speaking, and slammed the pie into Mr Joyce’s face.

It is unclear what the motive for the stunt was.

The man, who appeared to be in his 60s, was quickly bundled out of the room by hotel staff and did not say anything during the incident.

Mr Joyce was not injured and after a short break he returned to the stage minus his jacket, jokingly asking “if there are any other pies can we get them over with quickly”.

Mr Joyce was speaking as part of The West Australian’s Leadership Matters series.

Police were called to attend, and hotel staff took the man to a separate room.

He was later taken into police custody.

Mr Joyce will today announce plans for Qantas’ new international wing at Perth Airport for its non-stop service to London.
