Rooftop Movies set for another season after City of Perth confirms sponsorship

Giovanni TorreEastern Reporter

THE ARTRAGE Rooftop Movie festival is set for another season after the City of Perth’s sponsorship committee recommended the City support the event.

The new season should run on the rooftop of the Roe Street carpark for the season from October 17 until March 19, 2017.

It is anticipated this will lose the City $167,696 in parking fees, something City staff argue will be offset by partnership benefits to the City of Perth for facilitating the popular event.

In January 2012, Council approved use of the Roe Street carpark for a trial operation of a rooftop open-air cinema to be operated by Artrage Inc., which led to four subsequent full seasons.

Artrage has used the rooftop carpark to screen outdoor movies and hold morning yoga sessions, and the City of Perth partnered with Artrage for a New Year’s Eve party.

City staff report that advertising and other promotions have been used to offset the costs associated with Artrage using the space.

The City reviewed operational and financial implications from previous seasons of the Rooftop Movies and as a result Artrage are required to ensure all planning, health and legislative approvals are in place before they can start to use the upper level of the carpark for events.

Artrage must also update and comply with hazard and risk assessment documents, address all occupational safety and health issues associated with the event, and have security and traffic management plans approved by the City at least two weeks prior to the start season.

Council will make a decision on the new season at its meeting next Tuesday .
