The City will arrange a meeting by September with the group, who have a legal right to use the ROW, to discuss and develop a compromise that will not negatively affect ongoing property access while adding vibrancy to the area.
The Highgate laneway next to Jackson’s restaurant is the topic of debate after Councillor Dudley Maier earlier this year suggested blocking it off to traffic, transforming it into an attractive open space. In April, he proposed putting bollards at a portion of it.
Some nearby business owners objected, saying they needed access for delivery and maintenance vehicles.
Ideas for the laneway include markets, a small bar, kids’ play area, busking space and outdoor gallery.
