RTRFM 92.1 is taking its 40-year celebration outdoors with a day-long live broadcast event from Hyde Park on April 1.
Neon Picnic will be a reunion of former and present broadcasters and local bands it has featured throughout the years.
Bank Holidays will come out of retirement to perform on the day and Alsy MacDonald, Jill Birt and Martyn P Casey will perform several Triffids songs as a trio.
Talks producer and program director Peter Barr has been with the station since 1994 in several roles.
He said the event was a way to open the celebration up to the masses with a family friendly vibe, including children’s activities throughout the day as well as a licensed bar on site.
“We have niche programming that people tend to dive in and out of; those who tune in for reggae may tune out when we don’t play it,” he said.
“We wanted to have the celebration in daylight hours to include all people.”
RTRFM general manager Stu MacLeod said the station always tried to push the envelope.
“We are always trying to create new content and each new member of the team has new fresh ideas and perspective,” he said.
“In the future we aim to increase our multi-media content, more film online and more interaction.”
