Six injured, police officer punched in New Year’s Day incident

SIX people were injured, including two women who were knocked unconscious, in violence early on New Year’s Day.

About 1.20am a group of six people, four women and two men, were walking along Mounts Bay Road between Mill Street and William Street.

They were approached by another group of four to five people, also a mix of male and female, who were walking in the opposite direction.

An altercation occurred resulting in all six members of the first group receiving injures.

A 60-year-old woman was knocked unconscious, received a black eye and hit her head on the road.

A 26-year-old woman was also knocked unconscious, required sutures to the back of her head and has a broken collarbone.

The other four people received minor injuries.

They all attended Royal Perth Hospital for medical treatment.

Police attended the scene and two men were taken into custody.

During the arrest it will be alleged an officer was punched in the face by one of the men.

The investigation is ongoing and investigators would like to speak to anyone that witnessed the incident, assisted the victims, or who has dashcam vision of the area from around the time.
