St Patrick’s Day festival cancelled over virus fears

THE City of Vincent and St Patrick’s Day WA inc. have cancelled this weekend’s St Patrick’s Day Festival due to coronavirus concerns.

The news came just before the City of Mandurah decided to axe the popular Crabfest set for Sunday.

The St Patrick’s Day event was due to start with a parade from 10am on March 14 in Leederville, followed by a fun day at Leederville Oval.

St Patrick’s Day WA Inc. committee chairman Olan Healy said he believed it was in the community’s best interests to cancel the event given concerns around mass gatherings.

“We know people will be disappointed but next year we will bounce back bigger and better,” he said.

“We would like to thank our sponsors, supporters and volunteers for all of their hard work in preparing for this year’s festival.”

Vincent Mayor Emma Cole said the City planned to continue supporting the event.

“This is a much-loved event by all members of the Irish-Australian community and the wider community,” she said.

“We would like to acknowledge that the festival is a massive undertaking for a voluntary community group who have worked really hard on the event over the past 12 months.

“We hope all festival sponsors will continue to support this event this year and in the future.
