PERTH police have charged a 31-year-old man with the murder of homeless man Ian Wilson.
Mr Wilson was found on the steps of the Metrochurch on Beaufort Street in Northbridge on Sunday morning.
Detective Senior Sergeant Tom Mills said police would allege the attack that led to Mr Wilson’s death occurred between 8pm and 9pm on Saturday.
“We have been able to identify that at 9pm the alleged offender was identified in very close proximity to the church moving away from the area,” he said yesterday.
Det Snr Sgt Mills said the CCTV footage made it clear the area around the church was very busy on Saturday evening and encouraged anyone who may have seen either the alleged offender or Mr Wilson to come forward.
The alleged offender, who is a Subiaco resident, will appear in Perth Magistrate’s Court this morning.
Det Snr Sgt Mills said the alleged offender had no known connection to the church.
“Metrochurch offers support to homeless and vulnerable people. (Mr Wilson) happened to be sleeping in that alcove on that particular night,” he said.
Police were not prepared to say the attack was random, but are still to determine a motive.
“Establishing a motive is part of the investigative process,” he said.
“We are looking at everything in Mr Wilson’s life as far as it can be ascertained.”
Police said that people nearby may have witnessed something important without realising it at the time on the evening of Saturday July 9 and should come forward with any information that could assist the investigation.
