UPDATE: The issue has been resolved and services are beginning to be restored, according to Telstra.

The company also said it was investigating a related issue in which some messages were incorrectly delivered.

“All messages will be held while we resolve the issue,” the statement said.

TELSTRA customers across Perth have been hit with phone outages after a fire at the Chatswood Exchange in Sydney today.

A statement on the Telstra website said the fire had been contained, however “damage has been caused to some power infrastructure.”

“As a result a number of customers are experiencing loss of service,” the statement said.

“Our technicians are currently completing a full assessment of the impact.”

The telecommunications company says service interruptions will vary in size and complexity, from localised events affecting few customers to large scale events affecting many.

Jetstar has also tweeted, saying up to nine flights have been delayed as a result of the outage.

Manual check-in is taking place at some airports.

Telstra had a year to forget in 2016, with network outages across the country forcing it to roll out a $50 million plan that would prevent nationwide outages in the event of a single problem.
