Thief filmed while stealing CCTV camera chased by owner through streets of North Perth

Jon BassettEastern Reporter

POLICE have described how a thief was filmed by the crime-fighting CCTV camera he stole before it was recaptured by its owner.

The owner was also sprayed with a substance from an aerosol can as he chased the criminal along streets in North Perth.

“It’s fairly unusual,” Senior Sergeant Brad Richards-Scully said.

Footage shows the burglar peering into the camera’s lens as it is screwed off the outside wall of a Knebworth Avenue, North Perth home about 11.10pm on April 24.

The theft activates a security floodlight, illuminating the burglar who drops the camera into his bag.

Sgt Richards-Scully said the home’s occupant then disturbed the intruder.

“The occupant has chased him down Knebworth Avenue and confronted him,” Sgt Richards-Scully said.

The thief retaliated by spaying his pursuer with an aerosol containing an undisclosed liquid, before the chase restarted and headed into Bulwer Street.

“Then the thief stopped, offered to give him his camera, ran again and has taken a swing at the victim,” Sgt Richards-Scully said.

The attempted punch caused the thief to lose his balance, trip, and drop the bag.

The chase reached Beaufort Street, about 500m from the pursuer’s house.

Sgt Richards-Scully said other stolen cameras were found in the bag.

The thief was described as caucasian, aged in his mid-to-late 20s, with trimmed facial stubble, who wore a flat cap, an earring and a dark-coloured Kathmandu-brand jacket.
