A YOUNG child and two adults are recovering in hospital in Western Australia after being diagnosed with the potentially deadly meningococcal disease.

They were all infected with serogroup W, which is behind a recent increase in the number of cases in the state, but the three cases are not linked.

So far this year, 24 cases have been reported in WA, comprising 17 serogroup W, five serogroup B and two serogroup Y meningococcal infections.

A total of 46 cases were notified in WA in 2017, double the number reported in 2016 and the most in any year since 2005.
