Threefold jump in calls over new bins

The new system introduced on June 29 prompted 4347 calls in the first week compared to 12,963 on July 31.

Stirling Waste and Fleet manager Sean Sciberras said during the lead-up the City added a dedicated "New Waste System" option for callers to select when phoning about the process.

"There has been a great response to requests for a garden waste bin with approximately 6500 requests received," Mr Sciberras said.

"The City has had some queries regarding additional red and yellow bins predominantly from multi-unit dwellings."

Before the new three-bin system was introduced, the majority of waste was sent to landfill following the closure of the single bin processing plant at the end of 2013.

While the City continued to recycle domestic waste about 35,000 tonnes of waste wwas sent to landfill in the first half of 2015.

Despite initial concerns from residents of multi-unit complexes, Mr Sciberras said the City had not attended any incidents related to waste but had visited residents to discuss the correct use of the new system as well as tailor collection options for each site.

"All the contents of the yellow and green bins are now being processed and a portion of the red bin contents are currently being processed at the DiCOM facility, which is expected to reach full-scale operations in coming months," he said.

Mr Sciberras said the new system was working "very well" with about half the amount of waste previously collected in the single bin more efficiently and effectively recycled.

"These changes have been implemented to keep the City's waste charge low while increasing the diversion of valuable resources from landfill," he said.
