In July 2009, Mr Sutherland wrote to the then Town of Vincent mayor about his concerns regarding the subway and how the City of Bayswater would work with Vincent to improve the area, which was on the border of the two councils.
Five years on, after multiple negotiations between the councils and the Public Transport Authority and successful applications for grants, the subway has finally been revamped.
‘I am very pleased that the Mt Lawley subway urban artwork is now nearing completion,’ Mr Sutherland said.
‘It is bright and interesting and has transformed the subway, brightening up a degraded area.’
Mr Sutherland said the area was previously plastered with advertising posters which became litter.
‘Hopefully urban art can be painted on the King William Street and West Perth subways in the not too distant future,’ he said.
