PERTH Labor candidate John Carey will be unrecognisable as Edward Scissorhands for his upcoming campaign fundraiser event.

In an attempt to reach a broader range of voters in the State election in March next year, Mr Carey, who is also the City of Vincent Mayor, will don a frizzy black wig, white face paint and fake scissors for hands in the guise of the famous Tim Burton character.

He will host a Halloween warehouse party on Saturday October 29 in which attendees are encouraged to attend in their most ghoulish get-up.

“I chose Edward Scissorhands because that is sort of my era, my teen years,” he said.

“I know Halloween is an American tradition but one thing I have learned about inner city residents is that they love to dress up; I have been to lots of school P&C events and they dress up in ‘80s and ‘90s themed costumes

“I don’t think this approach is risky; I want to reach to different people who have never attended a political fundraiser.

“People don’t want to go to an event and be lectured.”

Mr Carey is not the first mayor to hold his position on council while campaigning for State Parliament and he said there was not a “perceived problem” with it.
