Walter Road West benches do nothing to beautify area say residents

THE “lonely benches” on Walter Road West were not exactly what was expected when plans to beautify the area were put forward, according to a Bedford business owners.

The Guardian Express reported last week the benches along the street that Mt Lawley MLA Michael Sutherland found to be puzzling.

He said he passed them every day and questioned their locations as they were not under any shade or near parks.

Hair Con owner Connie Sciullo said the only people she saw use the benches were drug users.

“They just attract anti-social behaviour; there is nothing here to sit and look at,” she said.

“Local businesses requested a beautification of the area, what was executed was very different.”

Ms Sciullo said someone had hit one of the benches near her business, which ripped up the pavement.

“Someone could pick it up and put it through a window,” she said.

A City of Bayswater spokesman revealed the benches were installed in 2014 at the request of business owners.

He said there were no plans to relocate the benches.
