West Perth organisations given $30,000 to support LGBTI cause

Julian WrightEastern Reporter

TWO West Perth organisations will receive $30,000 each to support the LGBTI during the same sex marriage survey.

WA AIDS Council will use the money, supplied by the State Government, to deliver increased mental health awareness and support and Living Proud will be able to undertake health promotion and training specifically for LGBTI people.

The funding announcement on August 27 came two days after the City of Vincent held a rainbow flag raising ceremony outside its council chambers to show its support for the LGBTI community.

The flag, which has temporarily replaced the Vincent corporate flag, will be up until November 22, one week after the survey results are released on November 15.

Vincent Mayor Emma Cole said money raised from staff casual Fridays would also be donated to Living Proud.

Mental Health Minister Roger Cook said the survey process meant the LGBTI community was being forced to experience a hurtful and cruel campaign.

“The LGBTI community experience higher rates of mental health issues than the general population, and this is due in part to experiences of discrimination and exclusion,” he said.
