West Perth: police on hunt for man who attempted car jacking

Jon BassettEastern Reporter

A MAN jumped on the bonnet of a woman’s car, reached inside and struggled with her as she tried to avoid crashing during an attempted car jacking in Charles Street, West Perth, about 11.20am on January 20.

“A struggle ensued between the female driver and man; during the struggle the man reached inside the car and attempted to grab hold of the keys in the ignition,” Detective Senior Constable Steve Thomson said.

The woman was driving her Volkswagen Tiguan north on the street when she saw a man crossing the road, so she slowed and almost came to stop.

That was when her attacker pounced.

“The man jumped on the bonnet of her car, and then clambered to the driver’s door, opening it and attempted to physically remove the woman from her car,” Det Constable Thomson said.

The struggle caused the woman to release the car’s brake pedal and steering wheel, and the vehicle drifted towards oncoming traffic.

However, the woman avoided crashing, and instead hit a brick wall with the man still struggling with her.

The man assaulted a passing motorist who attempted to help the woman.

Her attacker was described as having a light skin colour, 23-25 years of age, about 187cm tall, medium build, short light brown hair, brown eyes and wore a light coloured T-shirt and shorts.

Det Constable Thomson said motorists in the area with dashboard cameras would be invaluable to the inquiry.
