Mad to Set Off Fireworks

WESTERN Australia has just experienced disastrous fires with great loss of lives, homes and property in Esperance, Waroona and Yarloop.

Yet, despite a total fire ban, we can have fireworks on Australia Day.

Are we mad?

Isn’t it time common sense took over and we then celebrated Australia Day in the winter instead of the summer to prevent the threat of fire?

Even though the fireworks are on the river in Perth and the lake in Mirrawarra Park, Armadale, lessens the threat somewhat, a ban on fires is a ban in any circumstances.

We do not celebrate the Queen’s birthday on the actual date, so an alternate date for Australia Day would be acceptable in the winter to prevent the possibility of fires.

It would also be in keeping with the official ban on fires.
