PERTH Wildcats vice-captain Greg Hire has been suspended by the NBL after being cited for allegedly striking Tony Mitchell in the Wildcats game against Cairns on Sunday.

The NBL said Hire made intentional, medium-impact high contact with the Taipans forward, and the offence was worthy of a two game suspension.

If Hire enters an early guilty plea, the suspension will be reduced to one game.

The incident occurred with seven minutes and 30 seconds remaining in the final quarter of Sunday’s game.

The Wildcats said in a statement they were “disappointed to be working through such matters in the lead up to two very important games, but will follow due-process in its response to the findings”.

The 179-game Wildcats veteran has never previously been cited by the NBL.

The Wildcats face two must-win games this weekend against Sydney and Melbourne to ensure a 31st consecutive playoffs appearance.
