FFA Cup: Western Knights upsets Perth SC to book semi-final place

Jayden LihouEastern Reporter

WESTERN Knights scored an upset victory over Perth SC in round 6 of the FFA Cup at Nash Field on Saturday to progress to the final four of the competition’s preliminary rounds.

The State League Division One side beat  last year’s National Premier Leagues WA (NPL WA) Premiers 3-1 to join Sorrento, Bayswater and Dianella White Eagles in the semi finals.

The home side got off to a dream start with a Jack Rycroft goal in the eighth minute before Perth responded just before half time with Niccolo Sabatini equalising from the penalty spot.

Two second-half goals from captain Paul Lloyd and Ben Coulter proved to be the difference between the Knights and their opponents.

Western Knights coach Trim Morgan said his side put in a sensational performance against Perth.

“The boys played out of their skin,” he said.

“They kept a great shape, passed the ball well and in the end I thought it was a well-deserved win.

“I’ve got faith that the lads can keep going, they work hard and train hard to the system that we play, so bring on the semis of the cup.”

Perth coach Ramon Falzon said he was disappointed with his side’s consistency during the match despite some strong performances in recent weeks.

“I don’t think we took them for granted, they deserved to win because they were simply better than us,” he said.

“After two good away wins against Cockburn and ECU (in NPL WA), I think we didn’t lift our quality to what it was in the last two weeks.

“The second half of the (NPL WA) season starts on Saturday so we need to bounce back and get back to winning ways immediately.”

In another round 6 upset, State League Division One side Dianella White Eagles defeated NPL WA side Cockburn City 3-0 at Dalmatinac Park on Saturday.

Striker Angel Andres scored a hat-trick against his former team to take Dianella into round 7.

A goal in each half ensured NPL WA team Sorrento beat State League Division One side Wanneroo City 2-0 at Kingsway Sporting Complex on Saturday.

Bayswater City ended State League Division Two side Gwelup Croatia’s Cup run with a crushing 6-0 win at Frank Drago Reserve yesterday.
