Mrs Durkin said it was wonderful to be recognised.

‘I started playing tennis at school and continued to play for most of my life.

‘Then when I retired I started volunteering regularly.

‘I also volunteered for many years at the Hopman Cup.

‘During that time I met a lot of celebrities including Feeder when he was about 18 years old.’

Mr Peirce said he was also honoured to be singled out and put his longevity with the club down to the supportive and friendly environment.

‘The best part is I am part of a good club and team,’ he said.

‘We joined as a family and I have enjoyed helping out with some of the juniors.

‘The club has just grown over the years and given me support during difficult times.’

However, Mr Peirce said memberships were declining.

He invited the public to attend a free tennis open gala day.

The event will take place at the club from 1pm this Saturday, October 18.

‘We’ve got a basis of a really great club.

‘We have a lot of support and people contributing,’ he said.

‘Many young people come and play casually, but I would encourage them to become members and be part of a great community.’
