MT Lawley batted the entire day to leave themselves in a winning position against South Perth in Premier Cricket at Breckler Park on Saturday.
Dylan Sharman top scored with 86, while James Newnham chipped in with 43 as the Hawks amassed a day one score of 7-274 from 90 overs.
The Hawks, who have lost their past two games and are sitting second last, are in a good position to push for victory on day two next Saturday from 11.40am.
It was a day of even contributions from the Mt Lawley batting line-up, with Shane Rakich (23) and Newnham putting on 69 runs for the first wicket.
Sharman was the mainstay and his 93-run fourth-wicket stand with Julien Goodall (37) put the Hawks in a strong position.
The young batsman eventually lost his wicket to spinner Jacob Mulder, falling short of his century.
Sharman’s 86 came from 169 balls and included five fours.
