NORTH Perth, West Leederville, Mt Lawley and Perth based hockey athletes have secured a spot on the Australian Hockey League (AHL) men’s and women’s teams.
Chris Bausor, Frank Main, Tom Wickham will join Rio Olympians Aran Zalewski and Fergus Kavanagh on the Thundersticks team and Roos Broek and Holly White will be part of the Diamonds team.
The line up was revealed this week with less than 50 days until the competition gets underway.
It is a season of firsts, with the this year marking the first time men and women’s competitions will take place at the same venue and the addition of international teams from New Zealand, Malaysia and India.
Hockey WA’s high performance manager Jason Butcher said the Thundersticks was an experienced team.
“We understand we have to regenerate this team and over the last two years a number of youngsters have been blooded in the tournaments and also through the games that have been played throughout the year,” he said.
“We have had a lot of our younger guys play in games against the likes of Great Britain and Malaysia this year so that’s part of putting experience into the bank for the future.
“This is an experienced team that the selectors have named but there is a large cohort in the broader mid 20s bracket which will give us a strong core to place the next generation around in the coming years.”
He said the WA Diamonds named a young team to help build towards future success.
“We’ve had a fantastic year with our women’s program and we’ve worked very hard to build a base for the future through our pathway,” he said.
“This is an exciting young team for the future of the Diamonds and we’re really looking forward to watching them grow and watching those first steps at this year’s AHL.”
The AHL 2016 will take place at Perth Hockey Stadium from September 29 to October 9.
