PERTH sports fans will get potentially a final glimpse of one of the greatest tennis players of all time, when Roger Federer headlines the 2017 Hopman Cup in January.

Federer, a 17-time grand slam winner who turns 35 next month, last appeared in 2002, with his now-wife Mirka, and he lifted the trophy in 2001 in partnership with Martina Hingis.

His playing partner next year will be world number 16 Belinda Bencic.

Acting Premier and Tourism Minister Liza Harvey said the State Government was delighted to have lured the Swiss great.

“We are thrilled that Roger Federer has chosen to start his 2017 season here in Perth,” she said.

“The Hopman Cup has welcomed some of the biggest names in tennis over its 28-year history, and the 2017 line-up is off to a terrific start with one of the greatest players of all time.

“I expect Roger will notice significant changes in Perth since his last visit 15 years ago.

“The city has truly come of age, and the visitation and international attention that the Hopman Cup generates will showcase this transformation.”
