OPERABOX returns to Darlington in September to present Massenet’s popular comic opera Manon, a tale that has enchanted audiences world-wide since its premiere at the Paris Opera Comique.
Perth will see a fully staged original production of the show complete with orchestra and chorus made up of local talent alongside artists from the US and Sydney.
Massenet’s opera focuses on the emotional journey of a young woman torn between love and her desire for Parisian high society.
The new production will be conducted by young international musician Christopher Dragon, returning to Perth from his second season as associate conductor of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
Dragon is well known to OperaBox audiences for his past work and as a conductor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.
Sydney-based opera director Joseph Restubog will make his WA debut with Manon, with the action set in the 1920s and performed in the original language of French with English subtitles.
The cast from Perth and Sydney will feature tenor Gaetano Bonfante (Opera Australia) as Des Grieux alongside Scottish-Australian soprano Jenna Robertson, who returns to Perth for the title role.
Baritone Sitiveni Talei of Opera Australia plays Brtigny, with Kristin Bowtell as Lescaut, Michael Heap as Comte des Grieux, Christina The, Esther Counsel and Katherine Goyder.
